Ghangad Fort is situated in the heart of Tamhini Ghat, about 100 km away from Pune. Though little is known about the fort’s origin and history, it is believed to have been used by the Maratha Empire as a prison and a watch tower to keep guard of the Pune-Kokan trade route. The fort is surrounded by three other forts, namely Korigad, Telbaila and Sudhagad.

Said to be at least 300 years old, Ghangad Fort was restored in 2011-2012 by the Shivaji Trail group with the help of local villagers. Owing to their efforts, the trek to the top of this fort has become relatively easy, especially after the installation of supportive ladders. So, if you are seeking to experience an exciting and safe hiking adventure with friends, Ghangad Fort is the ideal trekking spot for you.

Start early in the morning for Ghangad Fort. Gather with your friends at Ekole village, which is the base of this trek. From here, walk through a lush green thicket until you reach a small temple dedicated to Goddess Garjai. You may rest here for a few minutes and hydrate yourself.

Later, start hiking towards the top of the fort and reach the first entryway of the fort. After crossing this entrance, you will come across a couple of small rock cut caves which may have been used as prisons. On the right of this entryway is a spectacular natural archway, which is the highlight of this fort. A giant rock, which seems to have been separated from the main cliff is inclined against the fort wall to form a massive triangular shape opening. Stop at this point to click some stunning photographs and enjoy this miracle of nature.

Towards the left of the entrance, there is a rock face of 10-15 feet. Cautiously climb up the rocky patch by using the sturdy ladder installed here. After carefully crossing a narrow pathway you will reach a small rock cut water cistern containing drinking water. From here, begins a steep ascend leading to the second entrance of the fort.

The second entrance opens up to the top of the fort, where there are two bastions and a few water tanks. But it’s the breathtaking views from here, that leave you amazed. Feast your eyes on the striking beauty of the Sahyadris – the deep valleys, high forested plateaus and pinnacles. Also take in the magical views of the Telbaila massif encircled by mist, and the Sudhagad Fort and Sarasgad Fort looming in the distance.

Start descending after enjoying the outstanding views from atop the fort. On reaching the base, eat a delicious lunch at Ekole village and chill out with friends, reminiscing about the amazing trek you just did.
