Info
Chandan and Vandan are adjacent twin forts located near Wai in Satara District of Maharashtra. Both forts are situated on a hilly spur from the main ridge of the Sahyadris and are set at a height of about 3,800 feet. It takes a day to complete the Chandan-Vandan trek. The forts are mostly visited by trekkers and pilgrims.
Lying on the boundaries of Mahabaleshwar and Satara, the twin forts were built for protecting trade routes into Satara. These forts were built-up by King Bhoj II of Shilahar dynasty. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj overtook the forts of Chandan-Vandan alongside Kalyangad, Sajjangad, Ajinkyatara during his campaign of Satara in 1673. The Marathas ruled this region up to 1689 B.C. Afterwards the control of the forts was taken over by the Mughals. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj won this region in 1707. Later, the British took over the forts.
Chandan Vandar offer breathtaking views of the valley and small villages below. Post monsoon the entire region comes alives with greenery and little water streams. Atop Vandan Fort are a lake, a mosque, a warehouse, several tombs and many other ancient remnants. On Chandan Fort is the Chakreshwar Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many pilgrims visit this temple during the auspicious month of Shraavan. Right next to this temple is a group of 5 joint banyan trees called ‘Paachvad’.
While travelling from Pune, Bhuinj is the nearest town. There are two routes leading to the forts. The easiest route is through Ibrahimpur village and another route is through Belamachi village. Carry sufficient water and enough food while doing this trek as there is no potable water available atop the forts. You can stay at a hotel in Wai before and after the trek.
