Rankala Lake

Rankala Lake is a beautiful lake situated in Kolhapur. It is believed that the was lake formed due to a structural shift caused during a 9^th century earthquake. It is also believed by some that the lake was constructed by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. Rankala Lake’s name is derived from the Rankabhairav Temple, which is supposedly submerged under the lake. Today, the historically and culturally significant Rankala Lake in one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kolhapur.

The circumference of Rankala Lake is about 4.5 miles. The magnificent Shalini Palace lies on one side the scenic Rankala Lake and the lovely Padma Raje gardens on the other side. In the lake’s vicinity is a huge sculpture of Nandi – the bull, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Seating arrangements have been made on the promenade surrounding the lake.

You can sit near the picturesque lake for hours and soak in its stunning natural beauty. Or else, enjoy a leisurely boat ride in the lake’s serene waters. Birders will be delighted by the diverse birds seen around the lake and its premises. There are small gardens and play areas near the lake, where kids can play to their hearts’ content. Kids can also indulge in a fun horse-back ride.

There are several food stalls near the lake where you can savor delicious snacks like bhel, missal, kulfi and sip on tea/coffee. Before leaving, make sure to photograph the marvelous sunset that paints the entire lake and its picture-perfect surroundings in dazzling golden hues.
