Shalini Palace is a stunning palace situated in Kolhapur. It is located on the western bank of the picturesque Rankala Lake. The striking palace is named after Princess Shalini Raje of Kolhapur. It was built in 1931-34 for a cost of about 8 lakhs. The palace was converted into a hotel in 1987 and became Maharashtra’s first and only palace hotel. However, Shalini Palace Hotel was shut down in 2014, but one can still visit the palace to photograph its magnificent exteriors and spend some time in its landscaped gardens.
Shalini Palace is beautifully constructed with Italian marble and intricately carved black stone. Its wooden doorways are fitted with exquisite Belgian glass engraved with an emblem of Maharaja of Kolhapur’s crest. Towering black stone arches form the palace’s verandah and porch and add to the regal grandeur. The palace’s massive clock tower and its exemplary stained-glass arches have also been restored to their former glory. In addition, the palaces exteriors have been beautified with lush green gardens and soaring palm trees.
