Mahaganpati Temple, also known as Dholya Ganpati Temple is situated in the town of Wai in Maharashtra’s Satara district, about 89 km away from Pune. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the ancient temple located on the ghats of Krishna River is one of the most prominent temples in Maharashtra. Owing to its picturesque settings along the river banks, it is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wai.
It is believed that the Mahaganpati Temple was built in 1762 by the Raste Dynasty. Parts of the temple have been recently renovated and repainted. Made of black stone, the temple houses a huge Ganesha idol, which is about 10 feet tall and around 8 feet wide. It Marathi, ‘Dholya’ means fat and since the idol is so big, it is fondly called Dholya Ganpati. Painted in a vibrant shade of red, the idol is absolutely divine. One can easily touch the idol’s feet, seek blessings and spend some meditating or praying in the temple’s peaceful settings. Photography of the Ganesha idol and temple interiors is strictly prohibited.
Right next to the Mahaganpati Temple is another old temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Known as the Kashi Vishweshwar Temple, this temple has a Shiv Linga and a huge beautifully carved statue of Nandi. Two tall stone Deep-Stambhas are located outside the temple.
Many people visit the Mahaganpati Temple on their way to Mahabaleshwar or Panchgani. Often known as ‘Dakshin Kashi’, the town of Wai is also home to many other temples which are situated along the 7 ghats or banks of River Krishna.
