Chaulher Fort is a hill fort situated in the Satana tehsil in Maharashtra’s Nashik district. Also known by the names of Chaurgad and Chalheri, Chaulher Fort has a striking resemblance to Salher Fort, which is the highest fort situated in Maharashtra.

In 1637, Chaulher Fort, which was under the control of Baglan King Bahirji was taken over by the Mughals. Later, it was conquered by the Maratha Empire, alongside several other forts in the Baglan region.

The trek to reach the top of Chaulher Fort starts at Wadi Chaulher, the base village. The fort is situated at a height of about 3,700 feet above sea level. While ascending you will pass through three peculiar entrances. Even though it is in a state of ruin, the first entryway is striking and photogenic, whereas the second doorway is ornamental and carved out of rock.

Atop the Chaulher Fort are a few water cisterns, remnants of old buildings and fortification, a bastion and a couple of temples. One of the small temples is dedicated to Lord Chaurangnath and another is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The views of Satmala and Selbari-Dolbari mountain ranges from the top of Chaulher are simply fascinating.

Facilities

  • Carry your own food and sufficient water for the trek. There are no eateries and hotels in the base village. You may stay in the city of Nashik, which is about 95 km away from the fort.
  • Mode of Transport: Best way to reach Chaulher Fort is by car. Or you may go to Nashik first by train or bus. From Nashik, go to Satana. From Satana, take a bus or hire a car to go to Tilwan. From Tilwan it takes about 20 minutes to reach the base village of Wadi Chaulher.
