Info
Akkalkot, an immensely popular pilgrimage site is situated 40kms south east of Solapur. Lying on the border of Karnataka, it was home to the 19th century saint, Shree Swami Samartha who is believed to be the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.
This is the place where Maharaj emerged from a banyan tree and where he lived for 20 years of his saintly life. He resided in his disciple Cholappa’s house where his Samadhi and shrine currently lie. The Swami Samartha Mandir encloses the ‘Vatavruksha’ under which he preached and is believed that his voice still emanates from the tree.
The daily rituals begin early in the morning. Don’t miss the evening aarti at 8pm followed by the ‘Mahaprasad’. The Mandir Complex is clean and pleasant, but the temple is usually pretty crowded so if possible try to select non-festive or religiously important days. Free accommodation and food are provided for the devotees.
