Irshalgad is a hill fortress and pinnacle situated about 15 km away from Panvel in Maharashtra’s Raigad District. The pinnacle of Irshalgad, which is visible from the Mumba-Pune highway is a popular trekking destination and attracts a lot of hardcore trekkers.
Irshalgad is the sister fort of Prabalgad. Since Irshalgad is a pinnacle and not an actual fort, it finds very mentions in history. However, it is believed that Irshalad must have come under the Maratha regime in May 1666, when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered the entire region of Kalyan and Bhiwandi.
Irshalwadi is the base village of Irshalgad. The entire Irshalgad trek takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete. The trek till the pinnacle base is moderately difficult with some steep and narrow patches along the way. Artificial rock-climbing equipment is needed to climb the pinnacle. However, climbing the pinnacle is very challenging and not recommended, especially during monsoon. There have been a few incidents in the past when people have lost their footing and met with a tragic end while ascending this pinnacle.
During monsoon, the Irshalgad trek becomes even more challenging. However, this is the time when the pinnacle is draped in clouds and its surroundings are covered in a refreshing hue of green. The views from the top of Irshalgad are absolutely mesmerizing. On a clear day, one can easily spot the forts of Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi, Malanggad, Karnala and Manikgad.
Besides doing the trek, one can also spend a few hours soaking in Irshalwadi village’s rustic settings and exploring the simplicity of rural life. The village sarpanch will arrange food on request. It is an amazing experience to eat home-cooked food prepared on a wood-fired chulha.
