Velneshwar

The small village of Velneshwar, 170kms from Ratnagiri and north of the river Shastri, boasts of the picture perfect lush green coconut trees and white sand. The serenity of this beach is yet undiscovered by a large population but it is a beach lovers paradise. The importance of this little village is noticed during Maha Shivaratri in March when hundreds of devotees flock to the very popular Velneshwar Shiva Temple. According to an old folk, God instantly fulfilled peoples wishes without wasting time (vel in Marathi) hence the name ‘velneshwar’. Do plan to put that to test! The 70sq m temple was built by the Gadgils and today is the kulkdaivat of Gokhales, Savarkars and Gadgils.
