The mighty Torna Fort is of great historic significance as it the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16.
Info
Of the many forts that surround Pune, Torna is one of the trekkers favorite destinations. This magnificent fort attracts adventure lovers all through the year. But to witness this place in all its glory visit it specially in the monsoons when the whole fort is dressed in a carpet of bright green foliage and is home to a number of beautiful streams and splendid waterfalls.
Torna is located 53 kms to the Southwest of Pune. At an elevation of 1403 meters it is the highest fort in Pune District. The fort was the first captured by Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16.
Velhe village is situated at the base of the fort. Being at a short distance from Pune, Velhe can be reached within one and a half hour. Public transport buses are available from Swargate to Velhe. The climb to the top of the fort starts from Velhe and can be comfortably completed within 2-3 hours.
The climb is not very tough, although the road may get slippery in the monsoon months. The way to the top is filled with beautiful sights. As you climb higher, the village and surroundings look like a scene from an artist’s canvas!
Once on top you can see the remains of the traditional stone architecture from the times of Shivaji Maharaj. The towering Konkan Darwaja, Kothi Darwaja and Bini Darwaja welcome you to the top of the fort. There are two temples on the fort. One of the Menghai goddess and other of the Torarjai goddess. Trekkers that plan on staying on the fort can stay in the Toarjai goddess temple. There is an alternative route to Torna via Rajgad Fort. This route takes trekkers through the ridges of Sahyadri. This is a longer route which although easy, takes 6-7 hours and is ideal for a two-day trek.
There are no shops or restaurants on top of the fort hence be sure to carry ample food and water. A few shops can be found in Velhe that provide for basic necessities.
