The Sinhagad to Rajgad Trek brings together the forts of Sinhagad and Rajgad - two of the most renowned and much-loved forts in Maharashtra.
Info
The historically important Rajgad Fort is one of the most respected forts in Maharashtra. Similarly, Torna Fort is also historically significant, being the first fort captured by the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, when he was just 16. Over the years, the challenging Rajgad to Torna Trek has gained immense popularity, attracting avid trekkers and adventure enthusiasts from all over Maharashtra as well as India.
Rajgad Fort is located about 65 km southwest of Pune. You can take a bus from Swargate bus-stop to reach Gunjavane, the base village of Rajgad Fort. From Gunjavane, it takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach the top of Rajgad. It is advisable to complete this part of the trek a few hours before dawn, so that you can leave for Torna at daybreak.
Rajgad and Torna are connected by an approximately 12 to 13 km long ridge. Descending the ridge leads you to Rajgad’s Sanjeevani Machi. The ridge is mostly plain, but gains elevation in some part, especially just before approaching Torna Fort. This makes the trek quite strenuous, but exciting nonetheless. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to trek through this stretch.
Once you reach the top of Torna Fort, you can refill your water bottles and hydrate yourself. Take a good rest at the Menghai Devi temple situated atop the fort, while marvelling at breath-taking panoramic views. Also make sure to explore the fort premises and sites including Budhla Machi, Zunjar Machi, etc.
After exploring the fort, carefully descend down it towards Velhe village. From Velhe, you can take a bus to reach Pune. The best time to do the challenging yet thrilling Rajgad to Torna Trek is during monsoon and winter.
