Info
Sumargad is a hill fort situated to the east of Khed in Ratnagiri District. Sumargad, Mahipatgad and Rasalgad are all located on the same 8-km-long spur that runs parallel to the Western Ghats. Sumargad is a less visited fort and there are no human settlements around the fort.
Sumargad is set at a height of about 2,897 feet above sea level. Very less is known about the history of this fort. Spread over an area of 1 or 2 acres, the small Sumargad Fort has steep cliffs on all sides.
The trek to reach the fort is through a remote dense forest. The fort can be approached from either Rasalgad side or from the Mahipatgad side. Both the paths unite at a col from where one can reach Sumargad. Recently, the villagers of nearby Malde village have installed an iron ladder to make it easier to reach the top of Sumargad.
Atop the fort, there are a few water cisterns, rock-cut caves, a Shivlinga and a goddess’s idol. From top of Sumargad, one can see the forts of Mahipatgad, Rasalgad, Chakdev and Parvatgad.
Facilities
- Make sure to carry sufficient water and food for the trek. Potable water is also available in some of the water cisterns atop the fort.
- There are no suitable shelters atop the fort, so it is best to return the same day.
- The best way to reach Sumargad is by car or bus from Pune.
Things to do
- Embark on an exciting trek to the less explored Sumargad Fort in Ratnagiri District.
