Shani Shingnapur

A religious place with an intriguing past and present, Shani Shingnapur is situated 35km from Ahmednagar in the Nevasa Taluka.  The popular temple here has Shani as its presiding deity. Astonishingly, there are no doors in any of the houses nor are the valuable kept in lock under the fear of the wrath of Lord Shani. Mythology holds that the black stone of Shani is ‘Swayambhu’ which means he appeared at his will. It was discovered by shepherds and the lord commanded that there must not be any roof over his head hence till date there is no temple structure around the black stone. The story further continues to say that any person who commits theft will face his death.

Thousands of devotees pay their visits on Saturday to appease the lord. An ‘amavasya’ Saturday is considered even more pious. But to avoid the great rush, chose another day unless you want please the Lord too!

Shri Dattatraya Temple and the tomb of Shri Udasi Baba are also some tourist attractions in Shani Shingnapur.
