Pawas is located in the Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra, at a distance of about 20 km from Ratnagiri Town. The best time to visit Pawas is between October and March. Pawas is a serene place which is known for its captivating natural beauty. It is an intrinsic part of the socio-cultural landscape and offers an insightful peek into life in Ratnagiri.

Pawas came into the limelight after it was chosen by Swami Swaroopanad for his ashram. Shri Swami Swaroopanand was a spiritual leader who influenced an entire generation of Maharashtrians. Pawas has become a prime spiritual place in Ratnagiri district due to a very long stay of Swami Swaroopanand here. Swami Swaroopanand was a follower of Warkari Sampraday ( Tradition). He lived there for almost 40 years. His house has been converted into an ashram. On 15th August 1974, Swamiji had Samadhi (Self-immolation) at Pawas. He was 70 years old. His books and teachings will always serve as an inspiration and a guiding path for his followers for the ages to come.

In the premises of Swamiji’s temple at Pawas, there is a Dhyangumpha (Contemplation Room) and a Lord Ganeshji’s deity into a tree of Emlica. Swamiji’s home “Anant Niwas” is being preserved nicely by the trustees of the temple. Many festivals like Swamiji’s Birth Day, Gurupoornima etc. are celebrated in the temple. Many followers, not only from Ratnagiri but also from all parts of India believe in Swamiji’s Teachings.

Things to do

Ganpatipule-Ganapatipule is 21 kilometres from Ratnagiri. It has a well-known “swayambhu” Ganesha temple which is right on the beautiful beach. Ganpatipule has a series of beaches offering breath-taking views of the sea.
Parshuram temple– it is a very good example of ancient architecture and sculpture. The 3 idols of Kal, Kam and Parshuram are kept inside the temple. There is also a temple of Lord Parshuram’s mother, Renuka
Rajapur ganga-There are fourteen black stone “kunda” (pools), each about 2.25 feet deep. Fragrant waters of Rajapur Ganga appear once about every three years in great force from one of the pools, and stay for about two months. The temperature of water in each pool is different, even though they are at a distance of 1 meter from each other!
Marleshwar temple and waterfalls-This is a holy place for Hindus where the temple of Lord Shiva is located 70 km away from Ratnagiri near Devrukh. The temple is actually inside a cave. A waterfall is located nearby. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva moved from Maral village to Marleshwar when the Mughal emperor attacked the Konkan region and was threatening to destroy Hindu temples
Jaigad fort-The 17th century Jaigad fort is about 37 KMs from Ratnagiri. Although in ruins Jaigad Fort is a perfect place to have a picnic perched on a cliff overlooking the confluence of River and the sea. Jaigad’s sea fort is situated at a sheltered bay.
Gateway of Ratnagiri-The Gateway of Ratnagiri is located at the Ratnagiri Jetty, on the Mandavi Beach in Ratnagiri District. This structure with a sloping roof, at the head of the bay, overlooks the Arabian Sea.
Velas beach– Velas is a village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis. It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people .
Malgund : It is the birthplace of the Marathi poet, Keshavsut. His house has recently been renovated and converted into a students’ dormitory.
