 Location: Near Dapoli

Situated near Dapoli, Panhalekaji Caves are a group of 29 ancient Buddhist and Hindu caves which are more than a thousand years old.

Panhalekaji Caves are a group of 29 ancient Buddhist caves situated near the town of Dapoli in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. The caves are located on the confluence of the Kotjai and Dhakti rivers.

More than a thousand years old, the Panhalekaji Caves were discovered in 1970. The Hinayana sect of Buddhists began carving these caves in 3rd century AD. Between 10th and 11th century AD, the Vajrayana sect established cave 10, which is dedicated to their deities Akshobhya and Mahachandaroshana. During the Silahara rule, the caves also became the worshipping site of Hindu deities such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi. Some of the caves have sculptures belonging to the Nath sect, which combined ideas from Buddhism, Shaivism and Yogic traditions.

The caves are of varying size, some are large and some are small. A few caves are embellished with intricate carvings, while others are sparsely decorated. However, all the caves are striking and intriguing, and provide a glimpse into Maharashtra’s rich history and culture. The cave complex itself is very calming and peaceful. One can relax in the shade of the mango trees or simply sit and admire the natural beauty of this space. Since these caves are situated near River Kotjai, a huge variety of birds are seen flying all around this region.

There are a couple of routes to go to the caves, but the most preferred route is via Wakawali. From Dapoli bus stand, proceed to Khed, and then to Wakawali. Turn right at Wakawali and keep driving till you reach a T junction. From here turn right, and keep going till you reach the caves. The road leading to the caves is quite rough, uneven, and mostly deserted. But once you reach the caves, the effort of driving there seems worth it.
