Devbaug

Devbaug is a picturesque fishing hamlet, about 12 km south of Malvan in Maharashtra’s beautiful Sindhudurg district. Covered with shiny and soft white sand and surrounded by graceful coconut, casuarina and mango trees, Devbaug Beach lives up to its name ‘Devbaug’, which literally translates to ‘God’s Garden.’ If peace and quiet is what your heart desires, take a stroll across the shoreline, combing for seashells or lay back and observe tiny crabs trudging along the fine sand grains. Hire a boat to see the highlight of the Devbaug beach – the ‘Sangam’ point or the confluence point, where the greenish waters of the Karli River meet the blue waters of Arabian sea to form a lively spectacle. You may even spot dolphins during the boat ride, so be sure to keep your binoculars and cameras ready!

Most hired boats take you further to the Tsunami Island, which is believed to have emerged during the 2004 Indian ocean earthquake and tsunami. Once you reach Tsunami island eat some delicious ukadiche modaks, traditional rice ghavan and mouthwatering misal or indulge in some thrilling water sports available at reasonable costs. The boat will take you back to Devbaug beach, before the high tide sets in.

At every opportunity you get, make sure to savour the easily available and delightful Malvani cuisine, famous for its distinct flavours of coconut, tamarind and freshly-ground spices. Several local families from Devbaug have set up homestays, hotels and restaurants, serving quality and fresh seafood cooked in the authentic Malvani style.
