Chand Minar is a medieval tower located in the same complex as the fort of Daulatabad, near the city of Aurangabad. It is the 2nd tallest individual minaret in India. It is one of the best examples of Persian architecture situated in Southern India.
Modelled after the famous tower of Qutub Minar, Chand Minar was built by King Ala-ud-din Bahmani in 1445 CE to celebrate his victory over the Daulatabad Fort. The tower was then used to keep a watch over the surrounding region. Today, the minaret is one of the most visited monuments in Maharashtra.
Chand Minar is 30 meters tall and consists of 4 floors and 24 chambers. Made of pinkish bricks, the beautiful monument is striking and noticeable even from afar. A small mosque covered in Persian blue tiles is situated at the base of the tower. The minaret is an exemplary display of both Indian and Persian architecture.
The tower is visible from every corner of Daulatabad Fort. Inside the tower, there are about 100 steps that lead to the Baradari or Queen’s Palace. A circular balcony is present after every floor. However, entry inside the tower is restricted and closed to public.
There are several other wonderful attractions in the same complex as the marvelous Chand Minar including the Daulatabad Fort, Chini Mahal, Hatti Houd, Bharat Mata Temple and more.
