Info
Shri Ballaleshwar Temple is the third temple in the Ashtavinayak Yatra circuit. It is situated about 122 km away from Pune in the town of Pali.
The name Ballaleshwar is derived from the name of a devout Ganesha ‘Bhakta’ (devotee) known as Ballal. According to an ancient legend, Ballal was a little child who was so engrossed in the worship of Lord Ganesha that he forgot about hunger and thirst. Ballals’s father became angry with his son and hit him very badly. This is when Lord Ganesha descended upon earth and saved Ballal. Upon the child’s request, Ganesha promised to stay in the town of Pali in the form of Ballaleshwar.
The original wooden temple of Ballaleshwar was renovated in the 17th century by Nana Phadnavis, and a new stone structure was built. The Ballaleshwar idol’s trunk is turned towards the left. Diamonds are embedded in the murti’s eyes and navel. Instead of ‘Modaks’, this Ganpati is offered ‘Besan Ladoos’. A Mooshika statue (Ganesh’s mouse) is located in the outer sanctum of the temple.
