Info
Situated about 5 km away from Matheran Railway Station, Garbett Point is a secluded and comparatively unfrequented vantage point offering the most spectacular views of the Sahyadri Mountains. Witnessing a sunrise or sunset from Garbett Point is one of the main highlights of the Garbett Point Trek. Flanked by a gorgeous valley on one side and dense jungle on the other, Garbett Point is a must-visit trekking destination near Pune.
Matheran can be reached from Pune by trains as well as MSRTC buses. From Matheran you can hire an auto reach Diksal village, the starting point of the trek. In Diksal, there is a small manmade lake, which leads to a gushing stream of water. You can cross this stream with the assistance of ropes. After crossing the stream, carefully climb a steep hillock to reach a nearby village. From this village, a short and steep ascend will lead you to the Garbett Plateau, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the valley below.
From the Garbet Plateau, another short and steep ascend will lead to the Garbett Point. This path is very narrow and on one of its sides is a sheer drop of about 1000 feet right into the valley, so be extra cautious. From this point, there is a 5 km trail that leads to Matheran. It takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete this trek.
The Garbett Point Trek requires quite a bit of endurance and patience as there several steep ascents throughout the journey. However, the unparalleled views and the rustic surroundings of this region make this trek truly amazing.
