Mrugagad

Mrugagad is a small fort situated close Khopoli, Lonavala and Khandala. Set at a height of about 1,750 feet Mrugagad is shaped as a spur emerging from the Western Ghats.

Not much is known about the history of the fort. However, it is belived that Mrugagad was used as a watchtower. Owing to its shape, this fort probably did not need any fortifications and hence, there are no fortifications atop Mrugagad. The base village of Mrugagad is Bheliv and it is connected to the road via Jambhulphada, the nearest town. Khopoli is about 30 km away from Bheliv. One can reach Jambhulphada by taking a bus or a hired vehicle from Khopoli. There are quite a few hotels and shops in Jambhulphada.

Once you reach Bheliv village, it takes about 1 hour to trek till the top of the fort by taking the rock-cut steps on the eastern ridge of the hill. The trail passes through a dense thicket of mango trees. While climbing towards the top of the fort is a small rock-cut cave on the northern edge of the fort, which is quite difficult to ascend.

Atop the water are some water tanks, a small pond and remnants of old houses. Carry snacks and enough water for the trek as the water available atop the fort is not potable. From the top of Mrugagad, one can see Umbharking, Waghdari and all other surrounding villages.
