The historically significant fort of Harishchandragad, situated near Malshej Ghat, is one of the highest peaks in the Sahyadris and an extremely popular trekking destination.
Harishchandragad lies at the location where the boundaries of Thane, Pune and Ahmednagar districts converge. From Pune, there is a daily bus going to Khireshwar, the base village of the fort.
It takes almost 9 hours to reach the top of Harishchandragad from Khireshwar, so start early in the morning. The trail starts behind the village and ends at the top. The path has quite a few rocky areas, which make the climb strenuous and hard, but exciting nonetheless. Make sure you carry ropes and rock-climbing equipment so that’s it’s easier to go over rough patches. This trek tests your stamina, patience and endurance.
Embarking on this tough trek seems worth the efforts as soon as you reach the top of the fort. The spectacular bird’s-eye views from the top of Harishchandragad and famous Konkan Kada Point are truly rewarding. There is a lot more to explore atop the fort including several caves, the Kedareshwar Temple and more. Accomplishing this challenging trek is definitely an experience of a lifetime.
