The incredible Khandas to Bhimashankar Trek - from the village of Khandas to the beautiful locale of Bhimashankar is a must-do for every avid trekker.

The incredible Khandas to Bhimashankar Trek is on the to-do list of every trekker. Besides being a renowned temple town, Bhimashankar is also one of the most picturesque and popular trekking destinations in the Sahyadri Mountains. There is something for everyone at Bhimashankar – be it natural lovers, adventure enthusiasts or spiritual seekers.

Khandas is a small hamlet located around 29 kilometres away from the city of Karjat near Lonavala. You can take a train to Lonavala. From Lonavala hire a car or take public transportation to reach Karjat. Once you reach Karjat, take a ST bus or a shared auto to reach Khandas village.

There are two routes to reach Bhimashankar from Khandas – the ‘Ganesh Ghat’ route and the ‘Shidi Ghat’ route.  Both the routes meet each other midway through the trek. The Ganesh Ghat route is preferred more as it comparatively less challenging, whereas the Shidi Ghat route is adventurous and involves climbing a steep ladder.

It takes 4 hours to reach Bhimashankar via Ganesh Ghat. The Ganesh Ghat trail is about 8 km long and offers spectacular views of waterfalls and lush green forests. The route is often used by locals and other trekkers. Even though the trail is clearly marked, it is advisable to complete the trek before sunset as there is a possibility of getting lost in the dark.

On reaching Bhimashankar, explore the beautiful dense forest, and pay a visit to the historical and revered Bhimashankar Temple.
