Kopeshwar Temple is a beautiful ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the village of Khidrapur in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district. It lies on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka and is accessible from Sangli as well.

Khidrapur Temple was built in the 12th century by kings of the Shilahara Dynasty and Yadava Dynasty. Located on the banks of Krishna River, the temple is a stunning specimen of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture. The temple’s exterior is embellished with intricate carvings of deities and secular figures is absolutely astounding. The ornately carved 92 elephants at the temple’s base seem to carry the weight of the entire temple.

The highlight of the Kopeshwar Temple is its open Swarga-Mandap. The Swarga-Mandap has an open roof dome supported by 48 pillars. Each pillar is adorned with elaborate carvings of gods, goddesses and figurines of humans and animals. The diameter of the circular opening is about 14-feet. The view of the gorgeous blue skies from the opening of the Swarga-Mandap is absolutely spectacular.

Another distinctive feature of this temple is that here both Shiva (Kopeshwar) and Vishnu (Dhopeshwar) are seen in the ‘Ling’ form. Also, like other Shiva temples there is no Nandi statue guarding the main sanctum sanctorum. The reason for these unique features is attributed to an ancient legend. After Lord Shiva’s (Kopeshwar) wife Sati died by jumping into a Yagnya fire, he became extremely angry. His wrath would have destroyed the earth had it not been for Lord Vishnu (Dhopeshwar), who pacified Lord Shiva. Hence, the temple has two ‘Lingas’. Nandi’s statue is missing from the temple because he had accompanied Sati, when she had gone to her father’s place for the Yagnya.

The architectural marvel is a must-visit when one is in Kolhapur. The elaborate reliefs and carvings are a photographer’s delight. The temple’s beauty is enhanced even more during sunrise and sunset. The temple’s peaceful settings provide the much-needed opportunity to meditate and relax. Kopeshwar temple is truly the perfect blend of history, architecture, religion and culture.
