Shri Girijatmaj Temple at Lenyadri is the sixth temple in the Ashtavinayak Yatra circuit. It is situated about 96 km away from Pune. Girija is another name of Goddess Parvati, the mother of Ganesha and the wife of Lord Shiva. The temple’s name means ‘Girija’s Son’ or ‘Girija’s Atmaj’.
The temple is situated in a complex of 18 caves, which are of Buddhist origin. One has climb about 300 steps to reach the caves. The Girijatmaj Temple is situated in the 7th cave. The cave temple has a huge hall that is 53 feet long, 51 feet wide and 7 feet high.
The trunk of the Girijatmaj Ganpati is turned to the left and is illuminated by the sunlight entering the cave during the day. The entire Lenyadri Caves complex is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India.
