Dhodap Fort is a hill fort located in the Chandvad taluka of Maharashtra’s Nashik district. Situated at a height of approximately 4829 feet above sea level, it is the second highest fort in the Sahyadris after Salher Fort. In addition, it is Maharashtra’s third highest peak and the 29th highest peak in the Western Ghats.
Dhodap Fort was ruled by the Nizams till 1778. It came under the control of the Maratha Empire after the ‘Treaty of Bhalki’. In 1818, it was captured by the British.
The moderately difficult trek to reach the top of Dhodap Fort starts at Hatti, the base village. The ascend to the top is gradual. However, be careful as you tread over the slippery rocks. After an hour, you will reach a plateau. On this plateau is a small village known as Sonarwadi, and it has few huts, temples and some ruins. At this point, you can see the Ikhara Pinnacle in the distance.
From the plateau, keep walking along the gravelly path constructed by the villagers. The path leads to a steep rocky patch. Carefully climb over the rocks until you a reach a doorway. A big water tank known as Hanuman Taaki is situated near this entryway. In a few minutes, you finally reach the fort top. There are Persian inscriptions near the fort entrance. The fort has two rows of walls, several caves, bastions, water cisterns, and many other ancient ruins. One of the temples on the fort is dedicated to Goddess Dhodambdevi, the presiding deity of Dhodap. There fort also has temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva.
On one end of Dhodap Fort lies its dome-shaped summit, which is accessible through rock climbing. Along this path, you will see the famous Dhodap dyke, which is a wide gap on the western ridge on the hill. From here, enjoy the breathtaking views of Rawlya, Jawlya, Markandya & Saptshrungi forts. After exploring the fort, relax in one of larger caves. You may even stay there for the night if you have brought along the required cooking equipment and sleeping bags. Or else, start descending back to the base village.
